1.00-2.00: THE PERFORMANCE – AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS

Freely adapted from the novel by Jules Verne and the musical by Phil Willmott and Annemarie Lewis Thomas, this open air theatre event will enable you to treat your friends and family of all ages to a whistle stop tour of four continents, as dashing Victorian adventurer Phileas Fogg and his hapless servant Passepartout recount their daring attempt to cross the globe in record time. Put on by the Steam Industry Free Theatre. Free.

11.00-3.00: THE CONSULTATION – HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE SHELL THEATRE

There will be Questionnaires to fill in with your ideas and views about the future usage of the historic Shell Theatre. Children will be able to add their views through drawings. The Shell is currently being repaired – at the back as a depot for parks staff, and in front as a public performance space. Built in the 1930s, it has hosted all kinds of events including tea-dances, boxing matches, school award ceremonies, theatre shows and music gigs. 6 years ago the freestyle area in front of the stage was built for skateboarding and cycling stunts, but leaving a large assembly space for people to gather to watch any future performances. Since then it has been used to host a skateboard jam, a bmx world stunt champion display, and a night-time pedal-powered film show! What kind of activities and performances would you like to see in future

THE PROJECT

The Friends of Lordship Rec, supported by BTCV, are planning to make improvements to the park’s lake and have put in a bid to Groundwork’s Big Lottery Fund for £11,500*. [*Final figure, including development costs, subject to agreement.] There is a large build-up of silt and mud in the north-east corner of the water, the silt is smelly, unsightly and affects the quality of water in the lake and the wildlife that inhabits it.  At the same time, the island edge is damaged and the island is being eroded.  The Friends aim to remove the silt from the lake and use it  to restore the island and create a shallow water area beside the island to increase wildlife habitat.

The work will take about three weeks in the winter, a time of year which allows for the minimum disturbance to wildlife. It includes

• Undertaking an ecological survey
• Removal of silt and mud from area
• Restoration of the edges of the island using the silt and clay to stop further erosion
• Planting of aquatic vegetation along the island’s edge and on floating pontoons to help improve the water quality
• Management of the trees on the island to reduce leaf litter and increase light for smaller plants

THE SURVEY RESULTS

We wanted to know what park users and others think about these plans, so produced a 2-sided A4 Questionnaire which we took to the park, to local meetings and public events during July 2009.

115 forms were filled in (as set out below). The results were overwhelmingly in favour of the project, and are summarised below. The original filled-in forms (115) have been retained and are available for view on request.

Lordship Recreation Ground Masterplan

• The Masterplan Draft Stage C report completed by Chris Blandford Associates (CBA) is still in circulation for comment. In this document there is an updated play strategy  and draft plans for the new bike track, Lordship Lane entrance, Model Traffic Area and River Moselle water course have all been shown in more detail. All comments/feedback needs to come back to Luisa Baker (LB) by the Mid June 2009 so changes can be fed into the design(s).
• Phil Dunne (CBA) will be attending the LRUF meeting on 18^th May 2009 to go through the detail of the updated Masterplan.
• The next formal Design Team Progression Meeting will be held 26^th May 2009 at the BWFCC. There will be LRUF representation at this meeting as usual.

Playground

• The new playground installation is still on track. Construction started May 11^th 2009.
• Posters will be put up in the Rec to notify the public of the closure of the entrance gates on Walpole Road during construction. The project is still due to finish by the summer holidays. Ronnie Roach is the LBH Officer leading on this project.

City Farm

• Martin Burrows & Luisa Baker organised a successful trip to Hackney City Farm in May for a number of residents from Walpole Road.

Environmental Centre

• A Stage C report has been finalised by ATAP after a series of consultation events and progression meetings.

Moselle River Restoration

• Halcrow are currently still carrying out water testing at Lordship Rec and will be on site intermittently through the months of April and May – more info to follow.

Bike track

• Consultation for the new mixed ability bike track has been co-ordinated by Daniel Mintz (via www.ibikeride.com) over Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Daniel submitted a report for the architects and designs are now being drawn up by CBA.

Shell Theatre, and the Toilet Block (Lordship Lane)

• Drawings have been issued by the NPS Architects – See www.haringey.gov.uk/lordshiprec
• Focus groups have been set up for both buildings. The group have discussed and commented on the designs which have led to revised drawings.
• Further drawings to be issued in the near future.

Other News

• Play: LBH has been awarded £20K from the ‘Playbuilder Fund’ to work with London Play on a natural play project in Lordship Rec. LBH, LRUF Chair, CBA’s landscape architect and London Play will be meeting in Mid May to discuss the feasibility of this project.
• River: Lordship Rec. has also recently had confirmed a £200K contribution from the Environment Agency and ODA towards the River Moselle Restoration Project. This money will go towards match funding requirements.
• Nature conservation: A Phase 1 Habitat Survey of the Rec has been completed. A draft Tree Strategy Plan has also been drawn up mapping all the trees in the Rec, and proposing which may need to be removed/replaced/relocated or new ones planted during the improvement works. A wildlife/nature conservation group of key stakeholders is being formed, co-ordinated by BTCV, and are planning a site visit on May 21^st to assess some of the issues. A recent evening-time bat walk through the Rec organised by BTCV and Lea Valley Bats attracted 65 people, who all witnessed many bats around the lake.
• Personnel: Emma Harrington has recently joined Recreation Services to help devise a funding strategy for Lordship Recreation Ground – to pursue further funding streams to meet our outstanding match funding requirements.

Log of on-site works

• April 09: Soil investigations are being carried out at LRG by NPS from14^th-24^th April 2009. They will be on site carrying out borehole soil testing for the redevelopment works.  Complete
• April 09: NPS condition surveys for the Shell Theatre and Toilet Block Completed.
• April/May 09: Ecology Phase One Habitat Survey - April 2009 Completed. Draft Report issued..
• Halcrow will be on site at Lordship carrying out several drainage exploratory works. On May 26^th 2009 (am)
• Lordship Rec. Community Information drop in session to display all the latest plans and proposals and gauge public responses. There will also be a question answer session from 6.30 until 8pm – June 9^th 2009 at BWFCC 4.30 to 8pm – All welcome

Lordship Rec Users Forum

• Next LRUF general meeting is on 18^th May, 6.30pm at the BWF centre. This meeting will be attended by Phil Dunne from CBA who will be available to discuss the Masterplan in detail. Note: Minutes of all LRUF meetings: www.lordshiprec.org.uk/get-involved
• Next Lordship Rec Community Festival Sep 12 planning meeting is on Mon June 1^st, 6.30pm at the BWF centre. All stakeholders and interested organisations welcome.
• User groups have organised a number of recent events, including a BTCV-led daisy walk, a Friends work-in to improve the path through the woodland (another planned for May 31^st 2pm), and the Lordship Rec Dog Club have started weekly dog training sessions (Weds 7pm) in the Rec.  The Back To Earth community café (Fridays) and Tottenham Food Co-op Market Days (Last Fri/Sat of month) continue at the BWFCC.

We are designing an off-road bike track / bike park for Lordship Rec  weaving through the woodland by the adventure playground. This is because the old track needs moving and re-doing.

We know that the best people to help design the track are the people that will ride it. So, we want your opinion on how it’s made. We want to know what you want to see, so we can build something that everybody will love, and use, and will last for years. It has to be:

• attractive to current park users of all ages and abilities
• able to be used safely without staffing at any time
• able to fit into the natural landscape in an environmentally sensitive way

The Council are planning to build a new Integrated Learning Campus for the schools on the north of the Broadwater Farm estate. Regarding the Centre hey are considering whether to a. annexe it, or b. demolish and rebuild it, or c. scrap it, or d. just leave it as it is.

There are lots of concerns about this among local residents as the Centre was only built after many years and a great deal of campaigning and effort from the local community. But the Council wants to reduce the financial cost of maintaining and staffing such a large building.

As far as the future of Lordship Rec is concerned, the LRUF have already made it clear that key facilities and services for the regeneration of Lordship Rec are due to be provided from the Centre, and cannot be provided in the park: eg. sports supervision, changing rooms, industrial kitchen, conference rooms, large hall, and general all-purpose public facilities and staffing by the park. The successful regeneration of the park depends on such facilities and services, and therefore losing them is not an option, nor is moving them further away from the entrance into the park. There are also concerns that if some sort of new community facilities were built as part of the integrated campus there would be problems over community access and the ability to develop independent community initiatives, activities and projects.

Statement from Haringey Council:

Broadwater Farm Community Centre has provided recreational, educational and social activities for local people and neighbouring communities since 1992.

We want to provide the best services we can but we need to look at the way services are organised in the future. Broadwater Farm Community Centre is probably one of the largest Centres in the borough. We need a lot of investment to maintain it’s current standard and to make essential repairs. At present it requires a yearly Council subsidy of around £300,000 just to keep it running.

The Council is committed to providing excellent community services for this area. However, we must do this in a way which makes best use of our resources and is the most cost effective.

We also want to let you know that there are two developments taking place in the Broadwater Farm area – the Inclusive Learning Campus and the proposed regeneration of Lordship Recreational Grounds which will bring great benefits to the community. These developments may help us to make decisions about the future of the Community Centre.

Dear All,
You are invited to attend a special consultation event surrounding the regeneration of Lordship Recreation Ground. We’re seeking your opinions about designs for the new City Farm and Eco-Centre, as well as the revised plans for the park as a whole.

To answer any questions the following will be present on the Friday: the architects and designers, officers from Recreation Services and Neighbourhood Management, reps from Back To Earth (who will be managing the new facilities) and members of the Friends of Lordship Rec. On the Saturday, it will mainly be the reps from Back To Earth and the Friends of Lordship Rec.

There will also be information about the new proposals for the merger of the current Broadwater Farm schools and Children’s Centre by rebuilding them and creating an integrated learning campus at the site.

The event will take place in the Jazz Cafe, where there will also be gorgeous home-cooked meals made by local residents (available to buy at very cheap prices), as well as the Tottenham Food Co-op market stalls (with a range of organic vegetables and other products).

So all in all its going to be an exciting and highly informative event.
