- packed with exciting, informative, relevant, useful, empowering and fun-tastic green community activities throughout all corners of the borough!

This year’s annual Haringey Sustainability Month, coordinated by the Sustainable Haringey network, promises to be the most extensive programme of local green events and widespread publicity ever held in the borough. Throughout the whole month, local residents and community groups, environmental organisations and the Council have organised dozens of events in all corners of Haringey including film shows, festivals, nature walks and talks, practical seminars and workshops, skills sharing, information stalls, social events, bike rides and Dr Bike, visits to eco-homes and plant growing sites, games, meetings, protests, foraging trips, and healthy eating! These events will promote the positive green policies and practices our society urgently needs to adopt to deal with mounting environmental concerns and climate change. Tens of thousands of leaflets are being distributed to publicise the activities.

The full programme of events is set out below, and can be accessed from the home page of www.sustainableharingey.org.uk (please publicise!). By accessing the website, people can get the full details of the events planned, and can also sign up for regular Sustainable Haringey updates.

Sustainable Haringey is a grass-roots community network of local sustainability/transition groups (in Finsbury Park, Tottenham, Crouch End, Highgate, and Muswell Hill), working groups and projects (promoting sustainable food, transport, homes, waste, workplaces/economy etc), backed by over 1,000 residents and 50 Haringey organisations. We are promoting the need for a transition to a sustainable society based on: protection of the earth’s environment; sustainable, low carbon lifestyles and economy based on renewable resources and minimum wastage; strong and stable communities; empowerment of local people; and decisions being made for the long term interests of people and the environment.

What we do today affects the future and maybe even the very survival of our society. We are calling on all residents and local organisations to join in the activities, and to help make the changes needed so that we can create a society which is sustainable for future generations.

www.haringey.org.uk/hic

Next dates:
Thursday 26th November: The Lives of Others
Thursday 17th December: Looking for Eric

Babylon
Franco Rosso, 1980 (95 mins)

Before hip hop hit the UK, before we all waved our hands in the air (like we just don’t care) at raves and more significantly, before the Brixton riots, there was Babylon. Missing, presumed lost, the film has now been superbly restored and reissued, offering up an important document of the era, as well as being a cracking slice of 80s Brit cinema for anyone with a smallest interest in British street culture.

Babylon is primarily a tale of one man (Blue), but it’s also the tale of Brixton in the early 80s, specifically the story of second-generation black Londoners, stuck in an area of high unemployment, high crime and low investment. From the opening minutes, you can see the area crumbling in front of your eyes in just about every scene.

Unlike most films about reggae music and culture, Babylon doesn’t explore the sunny side of Jamaican life or West Indian gangland culture; instead, it looks at how the implicit radicalism of reggae mirrored political and social concerns in the urban areas outside Jamaica where the music was so enthusiastically embraced. Possibly one of the most important British films of the modern era and definitely one to make sure you see.

A Place in the City
Jenny Morgan, 2008 (30 mins)

Nearly 15 years since apartheid ended, millions of black South Africans still live in self-built shacks without sanitation, adequate water supplies, or electricity. But A Place in the City will overturn all your assumptions about slums and the people who live in them.

Shot in the vast shack settlements in and around Durban, members of Abahlali baseMjondolo, the grassroots shackdwellers movement, lay out their case against forcible eviction and for decent services. The film captures the horrible conditions in which shackdwellers live but it also captures Abahlali s bravery and resilience, in a political climate where grassroots campaigners like them are more likely to be met with rubber bullets than with offers to talk.
For the first time now , says S bu Zikode, an Abahlali member, poor people have started to speak for themselves. Now, that challenges those who are paid to think for us . Or does freedom in South Africa, asks Abahlali volunteer organiser Louisa Motha, only belong to the rich?

Monday August 3rd, 6.30pm

@ Broadwater Farm Community Centre, 1 Adams Rd, N17
All welcome!

Invitation to all local community groups
Once again the Lordship Rec Users Forum is organising its annual community festival and we’re inviting you and your members to get involved! Last year 3,000 people attended and participated (see below for a report). The festival is a key part of the ongoing efforts to showcase the potential of the park, encourage greater usage, continue to develop community-led partnership working, and to pursue the regeneration of Tottenham’s largest green open space.

The Users Forum is a partnership of the Friends of Lordship Rec, Haringey Parks Dept, local residents associations, Back To Earth projects, environmental and conservation groups, Broadwater Farm Community Centre, Neighbourhood Management officers, and other interested organisations. For the last 6 years we have been working in partnership to restore and regenerate Tottenham’s largest but most neglected public green space so that it can become once again a District Park that Haringey can be proud of.
Improvements already achieved include new active play areas, new paths, on-site staffing, and restoration of the lake and woodland areas. The children’s playground is currently being replaced and refurbished.

Last year Haringey Council successfully bid to the Lottery Fund for £4m to be earmarked to carry out major works including restoration of the River Moselle and the historic Model Traffic Area, development of an environmental centre and city farm, and overhaul of the general infrastructure (eg paths, entrances and furniture). That funding will be released following certain conditions being fulfilled including detailed designs and match funding. We are particularly pleased that, in a recent ‘plebescite’ run by the Mayor of London, Lordship Rec gained the most votes of any North London park and hence received an additional £400,000 funding. We thank everyone who helped publicise it or who voted!

The Council will be lodging a ‘Phase Two’ application in September 2009 to the Heritage Lottery Fund which will hopefully secure the funding sought. If so, the regeneration works will be implemented during 2010 and 2011.

As public discussion is still ongoing on the bid and all the improvement plans, and the Heritage Lottery Fund will be considering the final application to release the grant, it is vital that we all work together to showcase our willingness to support the future of the Rec.

We are inviting everyone who supports this restoration effort to help us organise our community festival this coming September. We are therefore writing to you to canvas your support and to ascertain what form your support could take.

We invite you to:

Take up the opportunity for a stall to promote your community organisation (with info, bric-a-brac, or an interactive theme – or whatever). If so please contact: felix_waterhouse@hotmail.com

Offer to organise, or help organise an activity at the event

Pledge funding or resources (if you have any!) for the event infrastructure or activities

Offer to help with publicity

Attend the next organising meeting on Monday 3rd August

Please let us know as soon as possible what you or your organisation may be able to contribute. Please also pass this on to any others who may be interested.
