The model traffic area is by the children's
playground. In its early
days it was unique. It was opened with great ceremony in 1938
by Mr Leslie Burgin, Minister for Transport amid wide press
coverage. 800 children clamoured for tickets to ride on one
of the 30 model cars or dozen bicycles. Nearly 22,000 bicycles
and cars were hired out within a month of the opening.
It used to be used as a road safety training area with road
markings,
traffic lights, crossings and even a miniature police box.
Although
many of the original features are no longer in existence,
the model traffic area is still a popular place for young
cyclists to play (See About the Park -History)
